FAQs

Q: Does acupuncture hurt?

A: Acupuncture needles are extremely fine and are inserted with great care and precision. Most people find the experience to be gentle and not painful—especially with Five Element Acupuncture, which is known for its subtle and nurturing approach. You may feel a mild tingling or a dull sensation as the needle activates the nervous system, which is often described as invigorating. Many points produce little to no sensation, and the overall treatment is typically very relaxing.

If you're receiving acupuncture for an injury, you might feel slight tenderness initially. This is a sign that the treatment is beginning to release built-up tension or pain. Throughout your session, your comfort is our priority—you’ll be regularly checked on, and any needle can be adjusted or removed if needed.

Q: Are there any side effects?

A: Acupuncture encourages the body to release physical and emotional blockages, which can sometimes result in temporary side effects as your system rebalances. These may include a sense of emotional release (such as crying), mild cold-like symptoms, or increased bowel activity—each a natural part of the healing process.

Some people feel deeply relaxed straight away, while others may notice changes over the next day or two. Occasionally, you might feel a little tired or light-headed afterwards—this is your body’s way of asking for rest. In rare cases, a small bruise may appear at the needle site, depending on your skin type and the area treated To support your recovery, we’ll ensure the room is comfortable and encourage you to stay hydrated and take it easy after your session.

Q: What should I do before my appointment?

A: To get the most from your treatment, try to avoid eating a large meal within an hour of your appointment, as digestion can affect your pulse readings and comfort. Please also avoid alcohol and strongly coloured drinks like coffee or dark tea, as these can alter the appearance of your tongue—an important diagnostic tool in acupuncture.
Wear loose, comfortable clothing that can be easily rolled up or removed to allow access to acupuncture points.

This helps you stay relaxed and ensures a smooth treatment experience.

Q: How many treatments will I need?

A: The number of treatments varies depending on your individual needs. Many people feel a sense of calm and wellbeing after just one session, but deeper or long-standing issues may require a series of treatments to fully address.

Weekly sessions are often recommended to begin with, followed by monthly maintenance treatments to support ongoing balance and prevent illness. Some clients find it helpful to align treatments with the seasons, as Five Element Acupuncture works in harmony with nature’s cycles—Spring (Wood), Summer (Fire), Late Summer (Earth), Autumn (Metal), and Winter (Water).

Q: What if I need to cancel or reschedule my appointment?

A: Life happens, and we understand that plans can change. You can cancel or reschedule your appointment easily through our online booking system. Please note that changes made less than 48 hours before your appointment time will result in the deposit being non-refundable.
