How Acupuncture Works
Understanding Acupuncture: A Holistic Approach to Healing

Acupuncture has been a trusted form of holistic treatment for over 2,500 years. It works by gently inserting fine needles into specific points along the body’s meridians—channels that connect organs, muscles, and tissues. These points stimulate the nervous system, sending signals to the brain that help direct the body’s healing response.

In today’s fast-paced world, many people operate on overstimulated nervous systems, which can lead to burnout. Acupuncture helps restore balance—calming the system when you're feeling anxious or overwhelmed and energising it when you're feeling depleted. This can have a profound impact on both your emotional wellbeing and physical vitality.

Modern research now supports what traditional medicine has long known. MRI studies show that acupuncture can increase serotonin, reduce cortisol, and improve blood flow to areas experiencing pain or dysfunction.

Unlike Western medicine, which often treats the body in isolated parts—bones, lungs, mind—acupuncture views the body as an interconnected whole—a holistic medicine. Emotional health is deeply linked to physical health, and treating one without the other can leave the body out of balance. Holistic medicine recognises that symptoms often stem from unresolved emotions, and acupuncture offers a gentle way to release what’s been held within.

Most people are built to just keep going when life gets tough. Cortisol levels increase but the brain makes sure the body can function and show up so we can live our lives through stress, grief, anger and resentment. However, our bodies have memories and if we didn’t work through our emotions at the time, then when we find ourselves in a good place again and our bodies relax, the emotion our body was holding onto needs to find its way out. This can put strain on the body, mind and spirit and we start to feel different. Whether that be through pain, physical symptoms, a feeling in the mind that something isn’t quite right, or a feeling that we have somehow lost ourselves along the way and our spirit has gone into hiding. When communication has been lost in the body, it is no longer able to regulate or heal itself.

Meridians—like rivers flowing beneath the skin—can become blocked by emotional residue, poor diet, medications, or lifestyle factors. When these channels are congested, energy cannot flow freely, leading to symptoms such as bloating, skin issues, allergies, fatigue, and hormonal imbalances. Acupuncture helps clear these blockages, promoting the healthy circulation of blood and lymphatic fluid.

By restoring harmony, acupuncture supports the body’s natural ability to heal. The mind becomes more resilient, the body more energised, and the spirit more open to inspiration and joy.
